The Axarquia is an area of Andalucia in the Eastern part of the province of Malaga. The name is of Arabic origin and literally means " the land to the east ", and is made up of 31 villages and many hamlets. Amid the rugged and often spectacular landscape dominated by La Maroma ( 2069m ) and the Sierra Tejeda, is the Vinuela reservoir, - a perfect venue for many forms of leisure activities.
Vinuela is within 45 minutes of Malaga Airport and can offer the visitor a peaceful alternative to the bustle of the Mediterranean resorts, whether it is just for a days visit or a main holiday.
The area has only begun to be developed in the last ten years or so, and so retains much of its original charm. This orginal charm is one of the factors effecting peoples decisions to go there, either to live or for visits. The region is famous for its wines, olives and fruits, and tourists are encouraged to visit the villages and sample the local produce. La Axarquia also offers wonderful beaches and beautiful rugged mountains, with lakes, waterfalls, rivers and national parks.
