The area which was founded in the 16th century, was built over an ancient Moorish town. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it became an important area because of its vineyards and was nicknamed " Little Madrid ". Many celebrities were born in this town such as the poet Salvador Rueda, Don Jose Galvez, marquis of Sonora and minister for the Indies during the reign of King Carlos III, Matias Galvez viscount of Galveston and viceroy of New Spain and his son Bernado, count of Galvez. Bernado played an important role in the independence of the USA.
Some of its most interesting sights are the church " Iglesia Parroquial de San Jacinto " and inside the pantheon of the Galvez family, the Royal Card Factory, the church " Iglesia de Benaque " with its ancient minoret and the house of Salvador Rueda.
The most important festivals are the day of San Bernado in August, and a cultural week before Christmas. The typical dishes are garlic soup and a postre pestino.
